SPIRAL EIGHT - GORSE HILL WILLOW PROJECT

This is an on-going page to chronicle the creation of the Spiral Eight at Gorse Hill, Greystones, Co Wicklow.
This creation was commissioned by Joan Davies, as an experiential, performance based structure to be used as part of Joan's unique form of art/dance exploration and furtherence of her Maya Lila Courses in Body/Performance Work.  Joan runs continual Workshops to provide both therapeutic and holistic based practitioners and participants to journey through the labyrinth of the continual joys that our bodies can provide for us on spiritual, intellectual and physical levels.  Please contact Joan Davies directly from her website : www.gorsehill.net for further information on this exciting and dynamic form of healing, dancing and movement opportunities......

The initial pegging out of the site....

The lower Eight - the peaceful reflective area, circled clockwise.....

Gary clearing out the top Eight - Chaos and discrepancy..... to be entered in an anti-clockwise direction

Cutting willow in Co Tipparary...... hard work!

Willing helpers - Ollie and Jordan loading the willow on the trail home.......

Me, Lusi, at last, its nearly ready to go......!

Grading the willow at its temporary residence before reaching Gorse Hill....

The willow arrives at Gorse Hill.........

Abbie - our Site Forewoman!!!! - it was a cold morning!!

The first thickest uprights are planted......

Uprights woven into arches to start the formation of the tunnel making up the outer ring of the Figure Eight...

A twisted mid-weave is added to space the rods correctly and to strengthen the structure.......

The first diagonals, lighter weight rods are added to form the lattice part of the tunnel....

And the tunnel wends its way further around the top Eight around the palm tree....

An overhead view of the work and layout.........

Carrying on towards the centre....

Lowering the arch height as we reach the centre

An ariel view as we start the lower Eight....

The idea is to mix the natural with the un-natural, hence the metal cage woven into the willow tunnel

A round metal table is added in an alcove for an Altar Space....

We continue around the tree stump in the lower Eight, adding archways into the central areas....

Always remember to water the rods in well especially when first planted for optimum growth

The lower eight tunnel is completed...

The final march back to where we started!

We created two seperate alcoves for the seats Joan wanted incorporated.....

 The wide main entrance arch...

Eight completed ariel view with the main archway

Start of the inner lattice 'open heart' uppper eight....

Resolving the top of the lattice in undulating shapes.... this also strengthens the structure

The two sides of lattice open heart is finished.....

We create a low archway into the lower eight...

First lattice is made following on from the low archway

TO BE CONTINUED..... COME BACK SOON!!!
